The Boy Scouts of the Philippines announced yesterday the winners of the search for the 10 outstanding Boy Scouts.

The winners were chosen from the 24 finalists representing the 10 Scouting regions in the country and were selected from among the hundreds of candidates from 109 local councils nationwide. Now on its 18th year, the search began at the local council level, then the regional level up to the national level. The last leg of the competition was the interview held during the 14th National Jamboree at the Philippine Scouting Center for Asia Pacific Region, Mt. Makiling, Los Baños, Laguna.

Exclusively sponsored by Coca-Cola Export Corp., the annual search is the biggest event in the Scouting calendar for the country's 2.5 million Scouts. The nationwide search begins in July and culminates in the awarding ceremonies held in October as one of the highlights of Scouting Month. The contest is for Boy Scouts (10 to 17 years old) and Senior Scouts (13 to 17 years old), who are Filipino citizens, currently registered and at least third or fourth year high school students. Three winners of the search were themselves chosen as outstanding Scouts of the Asia-Pacific, a bi-annual search for outstanding Boy Scouts in the Asia-Pacific, which was inspired by the Philippine search. Just recently, Bruce Willis W. Sing of Chiang Kai Shek College won the 2007 search held in Japan.

Winners of the search will receive two-year college scholarships, cash and other prices. Part of criteria for the selection of winners were community service, which refers to leadership and involvement of Scouts in projects where the beneficiary is the community, scholastic leadership or membership involvement to school-related activities, character development and bearing, and interview which includes communication skills and personality.

Binay in his message during the announcement of the winners yesterday said: "I see a beautiful country in your eyes. I see peace advocates. I see leaders that speak of bias to the poor and the marginalized. I see trees that hold the forest. I see money traded fairly in the market. I see responsible professionals making the country proud by connecting it greatly to the rest of the world. I see responsible fathers rearing the child in the ways of God."

This year's winners are: Asuka T. Toyoshima (Dagupan City Council), Arden Christopher Quiambao (La Union Council), Amador Ceasar T. Garcia, Jr. (Abra Council), Gatbunyi R. Bautista (Baguio City Council), Christopher Ray C. Manguera (Tarlac Council), Kenny Ralph S. Fernando (James L. Gordon Council), Paul Julian G. Hao (Manila Council), Adrian Joseph B. Tan (Manila Council), Nelson John T. Catibog (Batangas City Council), Jose Rafael D. Narajos, IV(Davao City Council).
